Our school is situated in Carramore which means An Ceathrú Mhór in Irish or the big quarter in English. A quarter was an old measurement of land. Carramore is very near Killasser which is a big, rural parish near Swinford in Co. Mayo. Cill Lasrach means the church of Lasair. Lasair was an old name which meant flame or fire. Although some say Cill Lasrach came from a Fermanagh woman, Saint Lasair, who came from Killesher in the south west of Mayo.
In Killasser there is a church, two schools, a community centre and a pub. There used to be a shop but it’s closed now. The population of the parish in 1841 was 6,962 and 4,852 in 1851 but because of the great famine it dropped. A lot of people died from hunger or emigrated to places like America and England. In 1981 the population in Killasser was only 1,467 so there has been a lot of movement over the years.

We live in Co. Mayo and the words Maigh Eo mean "Plain of the Yew". On the Mayo crest there are four crosses which represent the dioceses ; Achonry (where we're situated), Killala, Kilmadugh and Kilfenora. Mayo is situated on the coast (a maritime county) and the ship and the waves represent this. We can also see the green and red colours of the GAA when we look at our crest.
